Chapter 11

“Mike, you’ve been out of the hospital nearly a week now and you have yet to get out of this bed. Why don’t you take a shower and shave? That’ll make you feel better.” She pulled his razor from his travel bag. “And you smell like a sweaty old man.”

“What’s the point. I’m not going anywhere.”

“The point is, if you don’t get up and start walking and doing the things the doctor told you, you’re never going to get better. You want to get home to Westbrook, right?”

“I don’t feel good. Let me go back to sleep.”

“At least come into the dining area. I’ll make you some…”

“Egg whites and dry whole wheat toast? No thanks.”

Susan closed the door behind her. Evan had already gone to the hospital and she was left alone with a lethargic husband and hostile cat. She’d tried out some of the recipes from Lacey’s book and they were delicious, but Mike wouldn’t bite. His face was looking thin and she was sure part of his lethargy was due to his lack of interest in eating. Or was it the other way around?

She poured herself a bowl of Cheerios and coffee. The Cheerios reminded her of Mia, who she missed desperately. She was getting stir crazy and longed to sleep in her own bed. She’d tossed and turned all night worrying that Mike wouldn’t regain enough strength to work again. The financial implications were overwhelming. Thank God their house was paid off, but there were taxes and maintenance, in addition to medical expenses. When she brought her food to the table, Mittens jumped off the cat tree and ran behind the couch, making her crave the affection of Johann and Ludwig once again. She really missed her cats. And her granddaughters.

Her phone rang. “Valerie, hi. He’s okay, but he has yet to get out of bed. I know, it’s the worst thing for him, lying around like this. I don’t know how to motivate him, and Evan’s at work so much, I’m going crazy stuck in this apartment. I don’t know. I guess it’s okay to leave him for a few hours. It’s not like he needs me here while he sleeps. I’ll meet you there.”

She rinsed out her bowl and jumped into the shower. She felt like a kid going on a field trip, ramped up over going to the mall with Valerie. She could use a few new clothes, being she’d come with a weekend’s worth of outfits and was washing underwear every other day. Maybe she’d even pick up a few new t-shirts for Mike.

“Mike, I’m going to the mall with my friend Valerie. You’ll be okay, right? Can I bring you back anything? A book? Some chocolates?”

“Nah. Just hand me the remote.”

“There’s cereal in the kitchen, and skim milk if you get hungry. Want me to bring you a bowl before I leave?”

“Nah. Have fun.”

“Are you sure you’ll be okay by yourself? I’m nervous about leaving you.”

“I don’t need a babysitter.”

Susan gathered her purse and jacket, then waited downstairs in front of the gate.
